Joe Batir, a senior majoring in geology from Channahon, IL is a 2008 Morris K. Udall Scholar, and a 2009 Fulbright Scholar. Joe plans to pursue a Master of Science degree in Geothermal energy resources at The School for Renewable Energy Science in Akureyri, Iceland and his PhD at Southern Methodist University.

Lisa Furby, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering from Carbondale, IL was named to the USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. She is one of just sixty students selected nationwide each year. She plans to obtain a PhD and continue to conduct research in the biomedical field.

Chris Williams, a senior majoring in civil engineering from West Frankfort, IL was awarded a 2009 Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship. Chris is one of just sixty students chosen nationwide each year. He plans to obtain a Master of Science followed by a

The Office of Major Scholarship Advisement (OMSA) is the central coordinating office on campus that provides information, advice, and support for students who wish to apply for nationally competitive major scholarships.

The OMSA scholarships are highly competitive, typically requiring a minimum overall grade point average of 3.75 or higher. In addition to academic excellence, each scholarship requires that a student have an outstanding record of:

  • service
  • leadership
  • research
  • or all of the above.

If you feel that you have the potential to compete successfully for one or more major scholarships, you need to take the following steps:

Fill out the Application Forms
You may fill out the Major Scholarship and Honors Application form(DOC/PDF) and the Major Scholarship Essay form(DOC/PDF) either on your computer, or you may print out the form and turn it in to the Office of Major Scholarship Advisement.

If you are completing the form electronically, please save the file as your name, attach it to an e-mail, and send it to LBELL@SIU.EDU. Please choose the format below that you prefer.

If you have previously completed an Honors Application and have not completed the Major Scholarship Essay, please complete and submit the essay in one of the below formats to the Office of Major Scholarship Advisement.

Turn in the Application Forms
If you plan to submit your form electronically, please submit to OMSA a minimum of 24 hours prior to your appointment. Bring your completed Major Scholarship and Honors Application form with you to the OMSA, Faner Hall, Room 2513 for your scheduled appointment or e-mail (prior to your appointment) the completed form to LBELL@SIU.EDU. Be sure to complete your essay as well as your current contact information.
